The Punic Wars were fought between the Romans and the Carthaginians. This period of war was from 245 to 146 B.C.E. Rome eventually won their wars with Carthage and also conquered Spain, Macedonia, and Sicily. Rome would continue to expand even beyond these territories. Many people would have viewed this expansion negatively because they were being taken control of by a larger group. The Carthaginians especially because they were losing Sicily, which controlled all trade in the Mediterranean.
THE PUNIC WARS
The First War
In the first Punic War the Romans and Carthaginians fought for the control of Sicily. Sicily was important because, as stated before, controlled all trade in the Mediterranean. The Romans also had their sights set on Spain and Macedonia. Eventually the Romans won and Sicily was theirs.
The Second Punic War
In the second Punic War the Romans and Carthaginians fought for Carthage itself. You can imagine how hard the Carthaginians fought. The Romans were merciless and eventually Carthage fell and it was no more.
The Third Punic War
In the third Punic war, after the Romans had gained control of Carthage, the Romans destroyed it. They didn't want people to be able to ever bring it back or use it as another city. They burned it and completely ran it into the ground. They were so determined to prevent any growth of life of any kind that they spread salt on the ground.
