INTRODUCTION
Roman architecture and engineering are two more subjects that have bled into modern day. Read on if you want to learn about different accomplishments the Roman people made in these fields> :-)
ARCHITECTURE
VAULT
The vault was one type of architecture that the Romans used. A vault is a type of arch used to support a ceiling or roof. These were very useful when building sturdy homes.
DOME
The dome was another architectural feature used by the Romans. Also involving arches, the dome is a type of vault shaped in a half-circle that rests on a circular wall.
ENGINEERING
Roads
One of Rome's more famous engineering feats were their roads. These were made using layers of stone, sand, and gravel, and were a near necessity for getting around. The amount of roads that the Romans made, and the advanced craftsmanship that went into creating them was remarkable, especially for their time.
Aqueducts
Aqueducts were another amazing piece of engineering from the Romans. Aqueducts were canal-like bodies of water used to transport water to the wealthier citizens of Rome. These were especially amazing because they carried water roughly 60 miles before reaching their destination.
ROMAN VS. MODERN ROAD COMPARISON
As you can see in the collage of pictures above, Roman and modern roads were very different. A large difference is the material used. Modern roads are paved with a smoother coating of tar, whereas Roman roads had a top layer of stone over sand and gravel. This gives us a smoother ride than the Romans had- although on some Roman roads, the top stones were so close together that they gave as smooth of a riding experience as they could get. Roman roads were also far skinnier than our roads. The changes that were made were most likely changed in order to make roads easier to drive on- also, some of our roads have two lanes for two strings of cars at once. Although our roads are more advanced than the Roman roads, they were still highly exceptional for the times.
