INTRODUCTION
Roman art can still be seen in many places in the modern world. Below are examples that you may find in places you go often, including churches, restaurants, museums, and courthouses (okay, I lied, you probably don't go to courthouses often. I hope.) MOSAICS Mosaics are one type of Roman art that we see in the modern world. Mosaics are small colored tiles arranged in a picture. Typically, the Roman people would depict different designs including suns, animals, or even people. Usually, they stuck to a very earthy, natural color palette when creating mosaics, using tans and browns. FRESCOES Frescoes were a specific type of mural using water based paints (similar to modern day watercolors) on wet plaster. You could commonly find frescoes depicting beautiful landscapes, but they |
would sometimes show people. In this type of art, the Romans stuck to a more bright and wider palette, including a wide range of greens and white.
STATUES
Just as the Greeks, the Roman people also created beautiful statues. However, the Roman people's statues were usually more realistic, and were shown with more clothes.
MURALS
Murals were large artworks painted on wet plaster, commonly on walls or ceilings. (Frescoes are a type of mural.) When creating murals, the Roman people tended to use a wider, more bright variety of colors, including bright sky blues and leafy greens. (Kind of like the color of the text on this page!)
CONCLUSION
Overall, Roman art was impressive and beautiful, and has carried on to today.
Above is a picture of a modern mosaic and an older mosaic (in the collage with the fresco.) As you can see, the two are similar, but still have many differences. The modern mosaic has brighter colors and a wider range of texture and depicts a nice, decorative pattern, whereas the Roman mosaic depicts a dragon and uses a more bland and muted color palette. The modern mosaic was most likely changed to fit the needs and likes of the modern people; the Roman people depicted things that were important to them in colors of the Earth that they lived off of, whereas the modern mosaic shows more textures and colors in a decorative pattern, which fits our more decorative needs. Overall, Roman art was highly impressive, and still lives on today.
