In this expansion period Caesar is killed by the senate; while they feared him, they also loathed him for taking away their power. The next emperor is Augustus, he is in fact related to Caesar. This expansion period lasts from 44 BCE to 14 CE.
During this expansion period a lot of land was conquered by Augustus, from the Atlantic to the Black Sea and from the Sahara to the Rhine and Danube Rivers. He used the natural boundaries as barriers to defend his empire. At the height of the empire, which is a large area of land ruled by one person, it stretched from the Black Sea to the island of Britain. Many people would have viewed this negatively because they no longer had any say in the government and all decisions were made for them, good or bad.
