INTRODUCTION
The Romans had a government just like we do; in fact, they had a republic (a representative democracy) and a constitution (a body of principles or precedents which a government follows;) just like we do today! If you want to learn more, make sure to read on!
THE THREE BRANCHES
The Roman Republic had three branches just like we did! They had the legislative, executive and judicial branches. The legislative was in charge of writing laws, the executive enforced the laws, and the judicial branch was in charge of interpreting the laws.
SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES
Although the Roman and U.S. governments seem similar, they have differences too! Below is two lists; one for similarities, and one for differences.
Similarities- Both the Roman and U.S. executive branches both implement laws, and the legislative branches both write laws. In fact, all three of the branches of both the Roman and U.S. government perform the same jobs! The most basic similarity is, of course, that they are both direct democracies!!
Differences- In America, any person can be a citizen, whereas in Rome, to be a citizen you had to be a free male. In Rome, there are two consuls, where in America, there is one president. The written copies of laws, however, are completely different, in Rome it is the Twelve Tables and in America it is the Constitution. Although the U.S. and Roman republics may seem very similar, they still have lots of differences!!
